Stinky Pinky
a Screening of Experimental Queer Shorts
curated by Madsen Minax
Friday April 26th, 2013, 8-11pm

Films by: Kristin Anchor, Rahne Alexander, Zach Meyer, Dorian Bonelli, Tessa Siddle, Chris Vargas, Matt Wolf, & Latham Zearfoss

Performance by musicians Chin Xaou Ti Won, 8 pm opening night

SKYDIVE is pleased to present Stinky Pinky!, a collection of contemporary and critically engaged film/video work by artists throughout the US (plus Canada and Austria). This collection of works explores the idea of queer love through the lens of self-determination, structures of kinship, notions of agency, and the trials of representation. The products of those explorations result in appropriated/found footage videos, animated works, mockumentary, essay and portrait films, all of which reinforce a type of enchantment, whether it be in erotics, charm, beauty, humor, attraction, or repulsion and many combinations therein.

PRE-PRE-PREView-Party for the Great God Pan is Dead Blog “Pan Art Fair”
One Night Only: October 17th, 2012, 7–10pm.

To quote Robert Boyd on the Pre-party situation, “On Friday night, Houston’s millionaires will be out in force at the Texas Contemporary Art Fair’s preview night. Houston’s billionaires, however, will be found across the park at the far more exclusive Pan Art Fair preview party. But the truly exclusive event is the Pan Art Fair pre-preview party at Skydive Wednesday night. Only the very tippy top of the art-world elite admitted.”

Just kidding! Come celebrate with us on the 17th!

Also at Skydive that night: Pixelated Son
 — A collaboration of Sound and Imagery
, performed and created by John Schlue and Aaron Espinoza. Both Pixelated Son and the PRE-PRE-PREView-Party are being presented to celebrate the announcement of our upcoming book, Satellites and Socialists: On the Fringe of Houston Arts.

Source Material: Works by Brian Dupont and Chris Rusak
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 17th, 2012, 7–10pm.

Skydive is pleased to present a two-person exhibition featuring the work of Brian Dupont (Brooklyn, NY) and Chris Rusak (San Francisco, CA). Although they work on separate coasts, both artists share an interest in the aesthetic possibilities for language and text in contemporary painting.

Brian Dupont, Pipe Piece #2, Oil, alkyd, and marker on aluminum, 2010, 24″ x 2″ x 6″

Brian Dupont came to his application of language in art through an interest in systems and expanding his paintings towards the notion of a specific object developed by Donald Judd. The work he will exhibit at Skydive originates with this practice, building the surface of the painting out from the wall and forcing the viewer to mentally assemble the graphic marks and fragmented language on disparate surfaces into a single image.

Chris Rusak, Fukushima (This Theory of the Somatic), Collage on Masonite, 2012, 8.5″ x 9.5″ x .75″

Chris Rusak’s practice examines psychological interactions with texture, dematerializing printed and pressed media in response to spatial and social stimulus. His collage work to be exhibited at Skydive uses deconstructed texts to create compositions that question the automatic nature of thought processes, particularly spontaneous emotional responses to language.

The artists would like to thank Don Macdonald, Greg Allen, Barry Hoggard and James Wagner, Laelia Mitchell, Florian Teppner, Elisabeth Nevins, Olympia Lambert, Laura Isaac, Joanie Gagnon San Chirico, Dorothy and Joe Dupont, Robert Boyd, Christopher Moss, David Hoffman, Richard and Nancy Nevins, Robert Pearre, Alexis Manheim, Brian Piana and Skydive Art Space for their support of this exhibition.

a hand’s width
Anderson Wrangle
March 24–April 28, 2012
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 24, 7–10pm

SKYDIVE is pleased to announce a hand’s width, a solo exhibition by Anderson Wrangle as part of the 2012 Fotofest Biennial. In a hand’s width, Wrangle’s new photographs create a wave, an interruption in our own expectations. Wrangle states about his recent work, “Weight, tension, and balance play a large part in these photographs. Work, the direct connection between the mind, the hand and the object, is a significant metaphor.”

Additionally, Wrangle will exhibit documentation of his sixteen-mile journey of a section of Buffalo Bayou in a canoe that he himself built. These pieces further address Wrangle’s explorations into being within – and the rendering of – the landscape.

Wrangle received a 2010 Clemson University Research Grant for his photographic survey of the Savannah River Watershed, and he was a finalist for the 2011 Clarence John Laughlin Award. He has exhibited at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, FotoFest, Lawndale Art Center, and Rudolph Projects/Artscan Gallery.

Water City
Kim Anno
April 23–May 28, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 23, 7–10pm

SKYDIVE is pleased to announce Water City, a solo exhibition by San Francisco based artist Kim Anno. Kim has shown work in various national and international locations including the Berkeley Art Museum, Orange County Museum, and the Varnosi Museum in Hungary. Anno is the chair of the Painting Program at California College of the Arts. In Water City Anno’s new videos and photos address her concern around the intersection of art and science, particularly in aesthetic issues surrounding climate change and water. Anno states about her recent work, “Climate change and the rising level of the oceans, and the issue of water in itself has become a central focus in my work. I am performing hydrodynamic experiments in labs, tanks, creeks, rivers, oceans, and various other bodies of water.” Anno will include footage from a recent trip to Galveston in the exhibition.

The Doubtful Bureaucrat Comes Home
Lauren Marsden
One Night Only: April 23, 2011; 8pm

SKYDIVE is pleased to announce a one-night performance by Lauren Marsden, entitled The Doubtful Bureaucrat Comes Home. Marsden’s performance will happen in conjunction with Water Cities, a solo exhibition by Kim Anno. Marsden, from British Columbia, Canada, was a member of the fifty fifty arts collective as well as the Vancouver Public Art Committee. She received an MFA in Social Practice from the California College of the Arts. Marsden uses costumes, scripts, speeches, and ceremonial actions while assuming a rotating cast of characters in her performances. Taking on various kinds of public personas these characters, often feminized and allegorical, attempt to embody places and situations.
